Brief biography of Salawa Abeni


Alhaja Salawat Ibiwunmi Abeni Alidu was born on May 5th,1961 in Epe, Lagos State. She hails from Ogun waterside area of Ijebu kingdom, Ogun State, Nigeria. 

She is a Nigerian waka singer and she started singing at the tender age of thirteen(13). She became fully active in her musical career in 1975.

Her first professional album to sell more than a million copies was titled “Late General Muritala Rahmat Muhammed” in 1976 which she did in late memory of Rahmat Muhammed. She released the album under “Leader Records”. 

In 1986,Salawa Abeni had a misunderstanding with her label boss, Lateef Adepoju which led to their separation and her leaving the record label. 

However, she got married to the iconic Fuji musician, Killington Ayinla shortly after her break up with Lateef Adepoju. It was under the record of the fuji musician she released her albums till 1994.

Her mode of singing and her uniqueness made the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III awarded her as the “Queen of Waka music” in 1992. 

The famous musician, Sheriff Ilori popularly known as Big Sheff was given to by Salawa Abeni and his father is Killington Ayinla.
