The popular Nigerian raggae and rock musician, Majekodunmi Fasheke popularly known as Majek Fashek was famous for his genre of music and the amazing way he presents them. He was a guitarist and songwriter.
Pa Majekodunmi Fasheke was born in March 1963 in Benin of the old Bendel state. His mother hails from Bendel state while his father is an Ijesha man from Osun State.
Majekodunmi is a Yoruba word that means(do not let it pain you) and Fasheke means (The ifa oracle does not lie)
Majek Fashek musical career
The genesis of Majekodunmi’s musical career can be traced as far back as the time he joined his local church’s choir “Aladura” where he learnt how to play both guitar and trumpet, and compose songs for the church.
In the 1980s,Fashek’s stage name was Rajesh Kanal. He joined a music group known as “Jastix” which comprises musicians like Black Rice and McRoy Gregg. The Jastix group members were famous for being the in-house band of a Panorama show on Nigerian Television Authority(NTA) in Benin city.
The group was disbanded in 1987. Majek got a new deal and was signed into a new record label known as Tabansi Records. He began his musical career solely there and released an album named “prisoner of conscience”. One of the album’s tracks, “send down the rain” gave him a great reputation and fame as it was selected as the song of the year which made him became the top raggae musician in Nigeria as at that period.
The album won six(6) Pman’s awards that year as the album of the year and the Raggae artiste of the year. The send down the rain track, won the best song of the year.
Majek released another album, “I&I experience” in 1989 under the Tabansi records. In the album, he clamored for the release of the former South African president, Nelson Mandela.
Majek made his departure out of the Tabansi record label in 1990 to sign a deal with Columbia records(CBS) owned by Sony Music Entertainment where he released another album titled “so long, too long”.
Apart from being a raggae musician, Majek Fashek has featured in several nollywood movies and advertisements.
He stood among over 10,000 people to perform comedy at the Eko hotel hall, Lagos in 2016.
Majek Fashek personal life
Majekodunmi Fasheke was married to madam Rita Fashek and had four children together before both of them later go their seperate ways. Rita was the inspiration behind Fashek’s “without you”.
Majek Fashek’s death
Majek’s death was initially rumored in 2019 before it was quelled by his manager saying that his principal was only ill which was enormously critical.
On the 21st of June, the news of the death of the famous raggae and rock artiste took the airwaves. He died in New York city, United States of America after he had battled with esophageal cancer.
